Bicycle Club Brings Players With Big Packages By Hilary Morse, InsidePOOL MagazineThe third day at the Bicycle Club Casino for the final UPA stop had many interesting matches, bringing phenomenal players to the one-loss side and knocking a few surprising players out of the tournament. On the winners’ side, Alex Pagulayan of Canada and Efren “The Magician” Reyes of the Philippines matched up on the premier table that is being televised live on www.worldpool.com on pay-per-view. “The Lion” truly roared as he ran two of the first three racks and put on a seven-pack, leaving Reyes in the cold with an 11-3 win.
Danny “The Springfield Flash” Harriman and Nick Varner played an exciting match as Harriman started the match off with a 4-1 lead over “The Kentucky Colonel.” Varner put himself back into the game going 5-5 before trading off games and getting a 10-9 lead over Harriman. He ended up running the rack out to the 5 ball before he missed the shot and left Harriman with only a cross bank in the corner. Harriman missed the 5, and Varner ended up being forced to play safe on the 7 ball. Harriman attempted a thin cut to play safe and ended up scratching to leave Varner with a three-ball run-out to win the set 11-9.The packages were put on as Johnny Archer put a six-pack on Santos Sambajon, Jr. Archer was up 8-3 before Sambajon started tying the match closer to lose the set 11-8.On the one-loss side, Rafael Martinez was down 10-6 with Jeremy Jones on the hill. Martinez battled back and at 10-9 put a two-pack on Jones to run out the set. Later in the evening, Martinez gained a 10-9 lead over Dave “The Wave” Hemmah before scratching on the break, and Hemmah did the same thing to Martinez to win the set 11-9.A surprising upset was the win of Oscar Dominguez over excellent San Diego player Dan Wallace 11-3. Dominguez ended up moving forward to face “Hawkeye” Corey Harper. Dominguez started the match off strong with a 5-1 lead over Harper, who fought his way back into the match to go up 10-9. When the score reached hill-hill, as Dominguez racked the balls he joked with the crowd and said, “Someone’s got to go.” Dominguez broke, made the 1 and 8 ball, had no shot on the 2, and pushed out. Harper attempted to play safe and ended up scratching, and Dominguez ran the rack 11-10.Other exciting matches on the winners’ side include an 11-3 win of Marcus Chamat over “Rocket” Rodney Morris, Ralf Souquet over Charlie Williams, Mika Immonen over Max Eberle, and Ernesto Dominguez over Tony Robles. Buddy Hall knocked out Johnny Kang, and Paul Brienza knocked out the Scott “Freezer” Frost and then lost to San Diegan Louis Ulrich. on Saturday, Ernesto Dominguez will play Ralf Souquet, Jose Parica will meet Mika Immonen, and Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer will take on Marcus Chamat.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
