Billiard Events Mix Things UpTri-State Tour / North Bergen, NJ
by Rick Davis
The February 17-18 weekend brought the usual suspects along with a host of others for the Tri-State Tour's semi-regular straight pool event held at Gotham Billiards in North Bergen, NJ. The event featured four classes, each having their own event, with the Pro/A class playing a round robin format while the B, C, and D classes played in double-elimination format.
In the Pro/A class Danny Barouty, who leads the class in tour points this season, went undefeated. Starting with a 150-133 win over top pro Tony Robles, Barouty drilled his next two opponents, Dan Montavlo and Bill Horne, 150-33 and 150-14, respectively. In a close second was Robles, whose only defeat came from Barouty in the first round. Robles went on to eliminate Montavlo and Horne, 150-102 and 150-92.
In the B class Mario Sahatjin was undefeated through his four matches. Starting with a 100-64 win over Dan Chapman, he proceeded to defeat Ariel Rivera and Tim Edmonds 100-67 and 100-89, respectively. Meanwhile, Chapman was working on a comeback, knocking out Martin Kristy 100- 68, Charles Bromley 100-70, and Edmonds 100-50 along the way. In the finals Sahatjin and Chapman met again, but with a 40- and 22-ball run, Sahatjin ran away with the match 100-61.
The C division brought the most competitors, and from the start it looked like George Osipovich was untouchable. He began with 70-46 win over Charles Benson, following this up with three more wins against Jacob Schwartz, Tim Malloy, and Sal Lanuto to reach the finals. Schwartz, though, was on a mission. Starting with two strong wins, the defeat from Osipovich left him on the one-loss side—a long way from paradise. Not to be stopped he blew through five more matches—winning all by at least 20 balls—to reach the finals and a rematch against Osipovich. In the finals Schwartz unleashed a near landslide with high runs of 34 and 19 to win the match 100-47.
Finally, in the D division, Scott Abromowitz zipped his way to the finals, getting better with each match. He first notched a 60-46 win over Ed Savage followed by a 60-45 defeat over Al Passariello and then a 60-36 win against Jeff Dworzenski to reach the finals. Dworzenski was the other shining star, with two strong wins of his own before meeting Abromowitz. On the one-loss side Dworzenski demolished Passariello 60-27 to claw back to the finals. The rematch between Abromowitz and Dworzenski seesawed back and forth until a high run of 14-balls by Abromowitz tipped the scales in his favor for the 60-46 win.
