Billiards Champions Crowned in Louisville2006 BCA National 9-Ball & U.S. Open One Pocket Champions Crowned KentuckyThe Billiard Congress of Amercia National 9-Ball Championships, which were contested in Las Vegas the past two years, moved to Louisville, Kentucky for 2006. The 9-Ball Championships were staged in conjunction with the U.S. Open One Pocket & Bank Tournaments August 29 – September 3, 2006 at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky – the home of the Derby City Classic.As in all BCAPL nationals, there was a stage for players of all abilities at this year’s championships – sporting great One Pocket and Banks play on 9’ Diamond Smart Tables, the best in amateur competition on 7’ Diamonds, and Derby City style action on 9’ Smart Tables in the side rooms.
In all, over 300 players competed for over $55,000 in prize money (with over $28,000 added) on 52 Diamond Smart Tables in a comfortable, player friendly venue at the Executive West Hotel near the airport in Louisville.The U.S. Open One Pocket Tournament fielded 56 entries, including the 2004 & 2005 champions, Cliff Joyner and Scott Frost. The field was well rounded, with many new faces and several young guns. In the end, a newcomer to major tournament play, Nick Vita of Memphis, Tennessee, prevailed over a seasoned Touring Professional, Shawn Putnam of Youngstown, Ohio for 1st and $5,000. Glenn Rogers and Adam Smith finished in 3rd and 4th, while former champions Frost and Joyner finished 5th and 7th respectively.Banks Tournament -- Kentucky is bank country and the top three finishers in the Banks Tournament were straight shooters from Kentucky. John Brumback from Owenton, Kentucky outlasted a Louisville favorite, Gerald Reichle, for 1st place honors and $3,600, while Trae Joyce finished third. The field included perennial bank favorites Louis DeMarco, Jr. (5th), John Grim (7th), and Truman Hogue & Glenn Rogers (tied for 9th).BCAPL Men’s Open Singles -- Brian White of Greenville, South Carolina held off Billy Peay of Louisville, Kentucky for 1st place honors and $2,500. Tom Summers of LaFayette, Indiana finished 3rd and Paul Bramwell of Lake Worth, Florida finished 4th.BCAPL Women’s Open Singles -- Diana Minor of Columbus, Indiana defeated Jacqui Herrera of Bartlett, Illinois in a masterful display of shot making. Kris Chism of Louisville finished 3rd and Amanda Saxby of Watertown, Wisconsin finished 4th.Saturday and Sunday, September 2-3 saw some particularly tough competition on the 7’ Diamonds, finishing with some very hotly contested finals…BCAPL Men’s/Mixed Open Teams -- The Regency Nightmares of Norman, Oklahoma prevailed over Smokin Chicos of Windsor, Ontario for 1st place honors, while defending champions, Stacy’s Sports Bar/The Corporation of San Antonio, Texas, settled for 4th place this year.BCAPL Women’s Open Teams -- The Thirsty Whale Ladies of Groveport, Ohio won first place honors in a hotly contested finals over The Young & The Restless from Waukesha, Wisconsin.BCAPL Scotch Doubles -- The Ohio pairing of Tim Chambers and Kelly Dyer prevailed over the Illinois pairing of Michael Dunklin and Angie Voorhees.10-Ball Open -- Will Bilbrey of Bradenton, Florida defeated Adam Smith of Detroit, Michigan to take first place honors in the 10-Ball Open.
