Burlson Claims 2005 McDermott OpenerBy Bill RosenbergerThe McDermott Midwest 9-Ball Tour was supposed to have New Year's off, but an Independence, MO, pool hall called The Break offered to host an event on New Year's Day.  Stanley Burlson took advantage of the event on the 9-foot tables to start his 2005 off on a winning note. The Break's owner contacted tournament director Harvey Hibner just days before to see if he wanted to have an event.  Hibner hit the phones and was able to spread the word, making the event a success.  Hibner later said the 24-hour poolroom was so nice that he plans on scheduling more events there in 2005.  On the tables, Burlson wasn't the only person making waves, as 16-year-old Mike Banks Jr. cruised through the winners' bracket to reach the finals undefeated.  Banks' journey also included a 7-4 third-round win over Burlson.Banks reached the hot seat match against David Hinonen, who started off the match with a solid break and run.  But his break in the second rack came up dry, and Banks put on a clinic, winning seven straight to take the match 7-1.Hinonen headed to the semifinals to face Burlson, who advanced with a 7-5 win over Darryl Smith.  Burlson continued his hot play against Hinonen, moving on to the finals with a 7-3 win.The double-elimination finals drew a crowd, as two of the day's best players matched up for a second time.  Burlson had the hot hand in the first set, winning 7-3, and the second set was more of the same.  Banks was unable to gain any momentum, and Burlson took advantage of all of his time on the table, earning the tournament victory 7-4.Results:1st Stanley Burlson $8252nd Mike Banks Jr. $5753rd David Hinonen $3104th Darryl Smith $1805th Vince Carter, Chuck Reed $75 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the McDermott Midwest 9-Ball Tour.
