Bustamante Busted by Morris at IPT Billiards EventHawaiian billiard player Rodney Morris went up against the undefeated Francisco Bustamante in the first round. Two two break and run-outs and a great break, it wasn’t long before “Rocket” had a 5-1 lead. Bustamante only put one rack under his belt before Morris reached the hill 7-2. Mounting a comeback campaign, Bustamante kept adding games to his side, breaking and running two racks to make it double-hill. Four balls into the final rack, Bustamante missed a straight-in, length-of-the-table shot. Speechless with disappointment, he returned to his seat while Morris, reprieved, took a break and then came back to win the match 8-7.“He missed a few shots he should have made,” Morris commented afterward. “He had a good comeback—he should have won that match, that was an easy shot for him to miss.”Regarding the shocking miss by Bustamante, Morris stated, “I knew it was over. I was so excited I had to go take a break and calm myself down.”IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship ForumsVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryWhat’s it going to take to make it through the day’s rounds? “Energy … I’m ready to go through the roof right now. I gotta calm down.”
Interestingly, Bustamante now leads the pack with 65 break and runs, with Morris and Ortmann one behind him. Ralf Souquet is next with 62, followed by Thomas Engert at 56.Of the other three Filipinos left, Dennis Orcollo, who took third place at the North American Open last July, defeated Mika Immonen 8-6, while Hall of Famer Efren Reyes met reigning U.S. Open champ Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan and dealt him an 8-6 loss. There are three Germans left in the mix. Ralf Souquet dusted Danny Harriman 8-2, and 2004 Player of the Year Thomas Engert went up against World Cup of Pool teammate Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann and walked awway with an 8-4 victory, having broke and ran five racks in a row. The bubbly Engert reported, “I feel more confident than the last few days—for me the big thing is I want to win the tour card, and I got it, so I am fine with that now. I feel very focused, and concentration is very good … I ran out five games.”But what about playing a fellow countryman? “We have known each other since juniors—we have had so many battles in Germany and Europe. Sometimes he win, sometimes I won. It’s always tough, but for a rhythm player like me, it’s easier to play.”Brit Mick Hill suffered a loss to Switzerland’s Dimitri Jungo 8-4, and his pal Karl Boyes also lost his first-round match to Spanish David Alcaide 8-2. U.S. player Charlie Williams was on the losing end of his hill-hill match against Niels Feijen, but Corey Deuel dealt a whopping 8-2 defeat to Hui-Kai Hsia of Taiwan.“I felt okay,” said Deuel modestly. “I could have played a couple of outs a little better. I got the break working and played good … Everybody is tough—whoever has the best day today is gonna get through, and hopefully it’s me.”Quick LinksPlayer StatsPrize Money Breakdown Round 5 GROUP 79K.
