Cappotto Narrowly Escapes With CNY WinBy Bill RosenbergerEven Dicky Cappotto had a stunned look on his face when Gary Empey missed what looked to be an easy 15-inch, corner-pocket shot on the 9 that would have put the final match on the hill.  But it was still a well-deserved win, as Cappotto took the CNY 9-Ball stop at Korky's in Syracuse, NY. The event, held on December 18-19, 2004, drew 34 players, with Empey and Cappotto being early favorites, along with Bruce Carroll and Jim Forsythe.  In the one-loss side, Forsythe ousted Carroll, but he fell to Travis Anderson, who sat alone in the semifinals waiting for an opponent.Cappotto and Empey faced off in the hot seat match with neither able to gain more than a one-game lead.  But Cappotto pulled ahead in the end to take the 7-5 win.  Empey then faced Anderson in the semifinals and ousted him 7-5 to force the rematch with Cappotto in the finals.Just as predicted, the final match was a nailbiter.  Cappotto took a 6-5 lead, but Empey had control of the table and ran up to the 9 ball, which sat a few inches from the corner pocket.  Whether it was nerves or simply a miscue, Empey was unable to knock down the 9, which stunned the crowd and Cappotto.  "There was just a dead silence that came over the room," said tournament director Mike Renshaw.  "Dicky just had a stunned look on his face."  Cappotto nailed down the easy 9 to take the match and the victory 7-5.  Results:1st Dicky Cappotto $4002nd Gary Empey $2803rd Travis Anderson $2004th Jim Forsythe $1505th Bruce Carroll, Jerry Fields $1007th Mike Houppert, Seth Del Villano $70 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the CNY 9-Ball Tour.
