Clock and Snow Undefeated
Viking Cues 9-Ball Tour / Logansport, IN
By Rick Davis
The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour offered a big weekend in Logansport, IN, where Coonie’s Rack and Cue drew in a total of 58 billiard players between the open and amateur events. After the March 24-25 open action completed, Charles Clock remained undefeated, while his counterpart in the amateur division had the same record after their single day of play on March 25.
In the open division, action on the winners’ side was narrowed down to Clock and Jim Coonie, who faced off in the hot seat match. Connie took a quick start, going up 6-2, but then a scratch on the break along with a five-pack from Clock soon ended the set with Clock winning double-hill.
On the one-loss side the remaining few each attempted to reach the finals. Leil Gay eliminated Steve Oaks 7-2, while Daniel Walton knocked out Marlon Angles 7-3. Walton was on an impressive comeback after getting defeated in his first match by tournament director Mike Janis. From there Walton took six wins to reach the quarterfinals, where he faced and eliminated Gay 7-5. Still on a roll, Walton pounded Coonie in the semifinals 7-3 to reach the finals after an amazing run. With the finals in motion Walton slipped by Clock to win the first set 9-7, but Clock soon caught a gear and, after remembering his goals, dispensed with Walton 7-3 to take first place.
In the amateur division Snow and Brian Williams met briefly in the hot seat, but Snow was eager to move on and quickly handed out a 7-3 defeat. Then the action moved to the one-loss side. Rob Venny shut out Jim Eales 5-0, while Ed Browning knocked out Jim Stoner 5-3. Browning had one extra rack in him while facing Venny in the quarterfinals that he was able to use to defeat him double-hill. Although Browning had a nice streak, Williams still had the taste of Snow in his mouth and after eliminating Browning 5-3 he has his ticket to the finals.
Initially the finals tipped each way, but when Snow scratched on the break with the set at 4-all Snow used the opportunity to snap the 9 on the break three racks in a row to win the set in stunning fashion. With one final set between first and second place each player would see their score at four racks; however, Williams’ score would go no higher as Snow cleaned up the set 7-4 to win the division.
