Czech Billiards Team Takes Down CanadiansThe Czech Republic pairing of billiard players Roman Hybler and Michal Gavenciak booked a quarter-final match up against Philippines as they beat Canada in a tense encounter at the PartyPoker.com World Cup of Pool. Canada, represented by Luc Salvas and Tyler Edey, clawed their way back into the match from a seemingly hopeless 7-4 deficit to take the lead at 8-7 but the Czechs dug deep to knock off the final two racks for victory. Who do you think will win? Discuss World Cup of Pool here. Both teams shared the first two racks as the some early nerves caused some misses and that set the agenda for most of the match.
The Brunswick Metro Tournament Edition table was playing very tight and anything that failed to not find the centre of the table tended to stay out. Salvas and Edey were still sharing a stick as Salvas’ cue case went missing several days ago and that eventually certainly counted against them even though they capitalized on a miss on the 1 ball by their opponents to clear and go into a 2-1 lead. Canadian Salvas missed the 7 ball down the rail in the next and that allowed Hybler and Gavenciak to clear to level things at 2-2. Edey scratched in the fifth game jumping out of a snooker. The Czechs with ball in hand went through the colours until Gavenciak missed a long 8 ball, trying to draw back for the 9. Salvas missed the 8 himself but fluked it in off two rails before Edey and then Hybler both missed nervous attempts on the 9 and it was left for Salvas to tap it in down the rail to go 3-2. He then scratched on the break in the next as the white was kissed in and with ball in hand the Czechs got back to parity. A bad miss, once again on the 8 ball by Gavenciak, gave the table back to the Canadians. Both sides had visits before the big Czech missed the 8 ball once more, but then saw it fluke up table into the top left pocket, leaving the 9 ball perfect for his partner Hybler to fire the Czech Republic into a 5-3 lead. Some better play from the Czechs increased their lead to 5-3 and they really turned the screws in the next as they went 6–3 ahead. Salvas again scratched on the break and Hybler, with a wide open table, missed a golden chance as he failed to pot the 1 ball. It was down to Edey to pot the 9 ball to reduce the deficit to 6-4 but the Czechs took the next to put themselves in a very strong position at 7-4. The Canadians took the next as Salvas left Edey an unnecessarily tough cut in the 9 ball but he took it to get back to 7-5 and they won the next to reduce the deficit further. In the 14th rack Edey missed a narrow cut on the pink 4 into the middle pocket where a shot of less pace may have worked. The Czech Republic , feeling the pressure, gave the table back to the Canadians and they took their third consecutive rack to level the score at 7-7. Canada ’s excellent comeback continued in the next as they moved into an 8-7 lead and with Tyler Edey breaking for the match it was theirs for the taking. Unfortunately, Salvas snatched at a cut on the 1 ball into the top pocket following the break and left it in the jaws. The Czechs bounced back though to take the match into the tournament’s fifth hill-hill affair and a fantastic break from Hybler set up the run out to see the Czech Republic into Saturday’s quarter finals.
