Davis Prevails and Smith Wins on the Falcon Cue Tour Event #17 of the Falcon Cue 9-Ball Tour was held at the beautiful Great Slates room in Cambridge, MD, the weekend of November 22-23, 2003. There were 56 open entrants and 10 ladies vying for their share of the $3,000-added money made possible by Falcon Cues and Great Slates.Eight of the top ten on the year-to-date points list were present to take advantage of this special "double points" event. Everything ran smoothly on the 14 Gabriel tables. By early Saturday evening, the winner side was reduced to Keith McCready versus Pooky Rasmeloungon and Mike Davis versus Shaun Wilkie. These four familiar names also happen to occupy the top four spots on the points list.
Play continued Sunday morning with Rasmeloungon overcoming an early deficit to take down McCready 9-6. The always entertaining McCready remarked, "I beat the line just by showing up before noon on Sunday!" The other match saw Shaun Wilkie score his first win over the current points leader Davis by a score of 9-7. Rasmeloungon maintained a lead throughout the winner side final, capturing the hot seat with a 9-6 win. Over in the elimination bracket, McCready stopped a six-match run by Josh Brothers with a quick 7-4 show that lasted less than 30 minutes. Mike Davis took advantage of a missed 5 ball by Andy Scott to tie the score at 6-6. With three balls on the break and a straight-in shot on the 3 ball, Davis easily ran out to advance. The McCready/Davis match also wound up at hill-hill where Davis again took advantage of a rare McCready miss to advance. This set up a rematch with Shaun Wilkie. Another hill-hill break-and-run put Davis into the finals. A convincing 9-3 first set win by Davis led the crowd to believe it was all over. Pooky Rasmeloungon was not convinced and quickly took a 4-0 lead in the second set. Undaunted, Davis tied the score at 4-4 and 6-6 before scoring a 9-7 win for his third tour victory of 2003. First place paid $1,200, with $800 for second. The Sunday women's division winner-side final came down to Amanda Page playing Amanda Smith. Page scored a convincing 7-1 win to take the hot seat. Pauline Mattes suffered a first-round loss to Page but recovered with three match victories. Another win placed Evelyn Hazlett into a personal best fourth-place finish. After a short nap and a 0-2 deficit to Mattes, Amanda Smith woke up and won 5-3 to take another shot at Page. Smith scored a convincing 7-3 first set win. The second set was also all Smith as she cruised to a 7-2 score for her first Falcon Tour win. Smith earned $350, with $210 for Page.Mike Davis stretches his points lead with just one event left this year. Sueyen Rhee survives missing this event to hold on to first while earning her touring pro status on the WPBA. The year-end final will be at Champions Billiards Café in Laurel, MD, on December 6-7, 2003.
