Davis Takes First on Joss Tour By Herb WhiffenUPA Rookie of the Year and reigning Reno Open champ Mike Davis came out on top at the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour event held the weekend of March 20-21, 2004, at The Renaissance Billiard Club in the city of presidents, Quincy, MA.This race-to-9, double-elimination contest had a $5,000-added purse and drew a field of excellent players, including Davis, road partners Karen Corr and Julie Kelly, Santos Sambajon, Robb Saez, Carlos Vierra, Teddy Garrahan, and others.
Davis cruised through the winners’ side to the finals, where his eventual opponent was Robb Saez, who suffered his first loss to Davis and then defeated Vierra in the semis to attempt his revenge. As the event was a true double-elimination tournament, Saez had to best Davis twice to take the title.Davis jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Saez bounced back to knot the score at 4. They swapped wins until both reached the hill at 8-all with Davis breaking. He made the 8 ball on the break, ran out to the 5, and then ducked. After a safety battle, Davis missed a hit, and Saez ran out to take the first set.In the second set, Davis got to the hill with a four-game lead, but it wasn’t long before he started looking over his shoulder as Saez took the next two games to make it 8-6. After Saez came up dry on the break, Davis studied at the 1 and the cueball practically frozen together and then made the 1 with a brilliant long bank. He followed this up with another long bank on the 2 into the same pocket and then cleared the table for a hard-won 9-6 victory.
