Day Three of U.S. Open - one-Loss Bracket Matches By InsidePOOL StaffEric Durbin is still alive after the afternoon round at the 28th annual U.S. Open. The Open began last Monday and is scheduled to finish this Sunday, September 21. Play will be suspended on Thursday but resume the next day. Durbin, who was recently the star of the Derby City Classic back in January 2003, also won the 8-ball division of the VNEA event last May in Las Vegas. His match against French champion Stephan Cohen was a nailbiter almost to the end. Hailing from Middleton, OH, Durbin is well known for being a master of the backroom match-ups, but he is setting a new reputation for himself as a feared opponent in tournament play. He forfeited his first match on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. but has been winning in the one-loss bracket since. His first match of the day against Larry Kressel he won 11-6 and then went on to play Cohen. Cohen had an early 4-3 lead, but Durbin began getting into his groove and pulled ahead 8-6 slowly but surely. After a 2-9 combo and a missed 8 ball by Cohen, Durbin was on the hill with his opponent at 7. He broke and ran out the next rack to win the match 11-7.
In the 3 p.m. round, high-rolling Tony Watson matched up with Ryan McCreesh. Watson had his first match against Francisco Bustamante last evening, which he barely lost 11-9. His match against McCreesh went much worse for him, and he ended up being eliminated 11-4.Tony Chohan of Sacramento played a tight match against Chris Szuter in which the two traded racks until they knotted at 7. Chohan pulled ahead when he won two games in a row, and then with an awesome 1-9 carom, he won the match 11-8.The winners' bracket matches will begin tonight at 6:30 p.m., with the featured match-up on the telivision table between Mika "Iceman" Immonen and Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer.
