Day Two of the U.S. Open Winds DownBy InsidePOOL StaffThe second day at the 28th annual U.S. Open has wound down, and things will be gearing up in the future because of Hurricane Isabel. The Chesapeake Conference Center will be closed on Thursday, so play will continue through Wednesday and then resume bright and early on Friday morning, possibly as early at 8 a.m. Wednesday evening, tournament promoter Barry Behrman plans to have a "pool party" at his room, Q-Masters.In a featured match this evening in the 9 p.m. round, Efren "The Magician" Reyes and fellow countryman Rodolfo Luat met on the Accu-Stats/Billiard Club Network table. Reyes was recently inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame last July and just won the Gabriels Las Vegas 9-Ball Open, promoted by Allen Hopkins, last August. Luat took an early 3-0 lead, looking confident, but then Reyes won the next three to knot the score at 3-all. Each won one more game, and then Reyes pulled ahead to a 9-4 lead. He made nothing on his next break, and Luat ran out, and then made the 9 ball on the break in the next rack to win the Billiard Club Big Break Bonus of $500. Luat has been the only player thus far to make the 9 on the break in a featured television match. However, he sold out in the next rack to allow Reyes to reach the hill with the score at 10-6, and then Luat missed a cut on the 9 ball in the last rack to give the match to Reyes, who won 11-6.
In another featured match this evening, speedy Canadian player Luc Salvas met Sacramento resident Tony Chohan. They had a tight match, but ultimately "Machine Gun" Luc won, with the score 11-9. 2002 U.S. Amateur runner-up Scott Tollefson had a great match against Ronnie "Everything's Funny When You're Winning Big Money" Wiseman, who recently came in second at the Capital City Classic over Labor Day weekend. Tollefson, who received a free entry into the U.S. Open when he took second at the Amateurs, played excellently and defeated Wiseman 11-6. Scott Frost almost got freezerburn in his match against Virginia resident Ron Zampko, coming back from a 5-2 deficit to squeak by with an 11-8 victory. High-rolling Tony Watson gave Francisco Bustamante all he could handle in their match, taking an 8-6 lead before Bustamante turned the tables and won 11-9. And Earl "The Pearl" Strickland escaped in his match with New York local Robb Saez in their hill-hill match, winning 11-10.The following are the final scores from Tuesday evening's rounds:Earl Strickland d.
