Derby City Classic Kicks Off InsidePOOL StaffThe Sixth Annual Derby City Classic kicked off on Friday, January 16, at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, KY, and the ring game has already seen its first victim. The $30,000 winner-take-all ring game, the brainchild of Grady Mathews and Greg Sullivan, began with six players and now is down to five. With Danny Diliberto and the infamous Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mataya commentating and Scott "The Shot" Smith directing, the ring game started out with Alex Pagulayan, Rodney Morris, Earl Strickland, Charlie Williams, Jimmy Wetch, and Corey Deuel, in that order. Morris, in his element in front of a crowd, quickly took the lead. As each game was worth $300 from each player, it wasn't long before "The Rocket" held $8,900 in his kitty while Williams languished with a mere $1,700. Go to the 9-Ball Banks brackets now
After the first fifteen games, the wager was upped from $300 to $500 per man, and by the end of the first game with the new stakes, Williams was ousted after a nice run-out by Deuel. Strickland seems to be playing a bit erratically, but for the most part, the five are playing their hearts out and loving it. The banter between them is rolling, and the crowd is standing room only at this point. The next round will see the games upped to $1,000 per man. Currently, Jimmy Wetch is leading with $8,900, and Deuel is on his heels with $8,700. With Pagulayan's win of the last rack, he is tied at $4,600 with Strickland. Morris now trails the pack with $3,200. As Smith put it, "It can all change in a Louisville minute."Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
