Durbin Defeats VarnerBy InsidePOOL StaffIn the evening rounds tonight at the Glass City Open, Eric Durbin defeated defending champion Nick Varner 10-8. Durbin, of Middletown, OH, won his first match against Greg Ford 10-1 on Wednesday. He was down 7-4 in his match against Varner and came back, only allowing his opponent one additional game before the score reached 9-8. He got out of line on the 4 ball, which looked to have about a 90% difficulty rating but gutted it with confidence, running out the rest of the rack to win 10-8.
The Glass City Open began on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, and is being held at the Clarion Westgate in Toledo, OH. It drew a total of 114 professional and regional players and will conclude on Sunday, November 16.At 1 p.m. Thursday, Tulsa, OK, player Gabe Owen defeated Danny Harriman 10-6, sending Harriman to the one-loss side. Keith McCready, who recently took third place at the U.S. Open, had a first-round bye and then was defeated 10-8 by Dan Wardrop. Maryland young gun Mike Davis won his first match against Bob Henning 10-5 and then defeated David Krolick in his second 10-0.Johnny Archer, who has been winning everything in sight of late, had a first-round bye and then dealt Wisconsin player and reigning Viking Tour Champion Larry Nevel 10-8 on Thursday at 5 p.m. High rolling Tony Watson won his first round against Mike Arden 10-4 only to be defeated by strong local player Joe Brown 10-9.The legendary Buddy “The Rifleman” Hall was upset in his second round by Al Naif in a hill-hill match, while another legend, Allen Hopkins, remains undefeated after his first two rounds.
