Dynamic Belgium Open Tom Storm on top of EuropeFrom 23 countries, 144 players participated at the last Euro Tour event of 2003. In the last three events this year, there have been a total of 510 players. Sweden's Tom Storm stands on top of them all after his fifth-place finish here in Kortrijk, Belgium. Storm's closest challenger and the current World Champion, Germany's Thorsten Hohmann, went out in the first round to England's Imran Mahjid. This left Storm at the top of the European rankings for 2003, and nobody can say he does not deserve it. Storm lost to fellow Swede Marcus Chamat in the quarterfinals 9-7 and the same score went against Chamat in the semis against Germany's Oliver Ortmann.
It was an all-German final with Ralf Souquet joining Ortmann with a convincing 9-1 semifinal win against Thorsten Schober, also from Germany. Souquet seemed to step it up a gear in the knockout stages. The closest anyone came was Finland's Stefan Sellberg, who took six racks off him in the quarterfinals. Souquet gave Ortmann no chance, beating him 9-2 and taking a great confidence boost to the up-and-coming Mosconi Cup.
