Efren to Duel With Deuel in Derby City One-Pocket FinalFilipino legend Efren “Bata” Reyes and young gun Corey Deuel from Ohio will battle out in the final of the Derby City Classic one-pocket competition on Friday. The day began with 15 players hopeful of taking the first prize, but Deuel and Reyes are the last two men standing. With one defeat behind him, Deuel now faces the daunting task of beating the brilliant Reyes twice to claim the first prize.Earlier in the day, Reyes emerged victorious from a titanic tenth round match with Banks champion David Matlock, who had previously been undefeated in the one-pocket competition. Reyes defeated the gutsy Kansas City cueman 3-2 after falling two games behind. Meanwhile, world 9-ball champ Alex Pagulayan was ousted from the tournament by Charles “Hillbilly” Bryant and Deuel knocked out Buddy Hall.
The eleventh round saw a Reyes-Matlock rematch (one loss Matlock exercise his right to buy back into the competition) and this time Reyes eased to a comfortable 3-1 victory. Bob Herchik ended Bryant’s bid and Jeremy “Double J” Jones was eliminated by Deuel while Tony “Ch-Ching” Chohan caught the bye.In the last four, Chohan went 2-1 up on Reyes and on the verge of victory, but yet again the Filipino genius found a way to win. In the other match, Deuel recovered from a mistake-strewn first rack loss to Las Vegas-based Bob Herchik to win 3-1 and earn his place in the final.Visit InsidePOOL for the leatest news from the Derby City Classic.Photo by JR Calvert InsidePOOL, courtesy BCn
