Europeans Going Strong in Round 3The day began with 60 players out of the original 200, and it will end with only 36. The difference in payout between today and tomorrow is $7,000, a hefty increase. Ralf “The Surgeon” Souquet annihilated France’s Yannick Beaufils in his first match of the day in Round 3. The German broke and ran out the first four racks, won the next, and broke and ran out the next rack before allowing Yannick one game. With the score 6-1, Souquet got back to the table and won the last two games.IPT discussion forumDay 4 image galleryMatch scheduleWhen asked about who he felt the strongest player was in his group, Souquet answered, “Probably Shawn Putnam. No, actually Dennis Hatch is in that group too. We have a pretty sporty group there. Johl Younger is a good player, finished fifth in the World Championships several years ago, and then he quit playing for a while, and now he’s back. Not too many people know him, but I know him quite well, and he’s always capable. I didn’t know Yannick before. In total, the group, maybe from the names not as big as many people thing, but I think it’s a very strong group.”
Former world champion Thorsten Hohmann had a convincing 8-2 win over Sam Monday, while Niels Feijen of The Netherlands bested Steve Moore 8-4.“Average,” Feijen responded when asked about how he played in his first match. “I played bad at the beginning, a little tight, and then I ran three and out, so I finished good. A win.“I felt really good yesterday—I ran four and out in my first, five and out in my second, I opened with five in my last—I got up seven-one in that one, and Schmidt ran five right back at me, seven-six. If he would have beat me, I would have been out. So I squeezed by there. I was playing good yesterday.”Feijen commented about his 8-ball game, “It’s always been pretty good. When I was younger, I used to have a little bit of a composure problem, like when I wouldn’t make a ball on the break and stuff, but my break’s gotten a lot better, and when you get a little older, you get more rest in your body. I think I play as good as anybody.”Raj Hundal bested Gary Abood 8-5 and seems confident going into his next match against Efren Reyes. Nick Varner suffered a tough loss to Dee Adkins—Varner reached the hill with Adkins still lingering at 2 when Adkins caught a gear and buzzed by, winning 8-7. Shawn Putnam bested Johl Younger in a double-hill match, and Rodney Morris did the same to Larry Nevel. The Filipinos are still doing well, though Dennis Orcollo suffered a double-hill loss to Jianbo Fu. Marlon Manalo easily handled Ronato Alcano 8-2, Antonio Lining dealt Sandor Tot of Serbia an 8-6 loss, and Efren Reyes won his match with Marko Lohtander 8-5.Sarah Ellerby was matched up with Gabe Owen but only put together four wins before Owen swept by 8-4.Round 3 Group 61Group 63Group 65Group 67R.
