Ferrell Takes Second Viking 9-Ball Tour WinViking Cue 9-Ball Tour / Hickory, NCby Rick DavisGoing undefeated, the animated billiard player Sparky Ferrell, winner of the mini tournament at the Viking Tour’s National Championship event two weekends ago, took another win on the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour, taking place at Randolph’s Billiards in Hickory, NC, December 2-3. This was the first event of the 2007 season, and 51 players showed up to kick off the new year, including three women and six juniors, all of whom had free entry, thanks to the tour’s new promotion to get more players involved in the sport.
As the winners’ side got down to four players, Ferrell faced down native Tony Watson 9-3, while Leil Gay Jr. met Brian White and defeated him 9-4. In the hot seat match, Ferrell got off to a quick 6-2 lead against Gay, but then a missed shot left Gay to run the next five racks. A scratch by Gay ended his chances, for Ferrell didn’t let him back to table again, taking the match 9-7. With the action moving to the one-loss side, all eyes were on Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton as he matched up with White. The match tipped back and forth until, at double-hill, White missed the 3 ball, leaving Daulton to run out and take the match. In the semifinals, Daulton and Gay played a rough, grinding match. Not one break and run-out was seen as the players chipped away slowly at each rack. Finally, with the match even at 6-all, Gay slipped ahead for the win to reach the finals.The finals offered a rematch between Ferrell and Gay, and this time things kept close. Racks were chalked up for both players until a 7-all score unfolded; however, Gay missed a key ball and did not see the table again, as Ferrell ran out that rack and the next to take the win.
