Ferrell’s Grand Finale at the Viking Mini Eventby InsidePOOL StaffColorful billiard player Sparky Ferrell was the first to taste success at the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour’s biggest event of the year. The tour’s National Championship event is being held November 15-19 at The Pool Room in Duluth, GA, and kicked off Tuesday evening with a celebratory mini tournament that brought in 53 players.Ferrell completely dominated the race-to-5, single-elimination event—after receiving a bye in the first round, he faced off with former World All-Around champion Larry “The Truth” Nevel. A double-hill bout saw Ferrell make a narrow escape, and after that point, no other player put together more than two racks against him.
After his smooth style carried him into the final match with a 5-2 victory over Stoney Stone, Ferrell awaited his opponent. Local talent Paul Song came through with a flourish, defeating Randy Jordan soundly 5-1. That was as far as Song would go, though, for true to form, Ferrell finished him off cleanly with a 5-1 win.Player of the Decade in the 1990s, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer is already warming up for the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour National Championship, which begins at 6 p.m., after the players’ meeting at 4 p.m. This event, which features a substantial $25,000 prize purse, has attracted some of the most famous and toughest players in the world.
