Few Surprises at the North American OpenSo far the biggest surprise at the North American Open in Destin, FL, hasn't come on the pool table. During Sunday morning's players' meeting, veteran pro Nick Mannino suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. UPA promoter Jim Dawson said that Mannino underwent a procedure on Monday but is unaware of Mannino's condition or prognosis. First-round play was expected to start at noon on Sunday, but was pushed back until the evening.
On the felt, most of the big names have commanded convincing victories. The biggest upset came in a first-round match that saw Steve Cox best Larry Nevel 11-10. Corey Deuel and U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen (above) also join Nevel in the one-loss matches today, with Deuel facing Frank Alvarez and Owen facing Chris Lynch. In the evening matches, Johnny Archer will face Tim Hall, Mike Davis matches up against Raj Hundal, and Tony Crosby will face Luc Salves. The two biggest matches of the night might just be Jeremy Jones against Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich, and Charlie "Hillbilly Bryant" versus "Rocket" Rodney Morris. In Tuesday's other action, Charlie Williams faces Wade Crane, Nevel goes up against Evan Broxmeyer, and Robb Saez faces Corey Harper. The event, which is part of the North American Tour, runs through Thursday at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa, with a second non-UPA sanctioned tournament scheduled to run Friday through Sunday.
