Field Shrinks to Eight at Reno OpenBy Rick DavisFriday evening at the Reno Open brought the field down to 24 players to return Saturday. As the dust settled on the one-loss side, another hand full of notables were eliminated. Gerardo Jamito knocked out Mark Tadd 9-5, while past champion Ronnie Wiseman kept alive by eliminating Texas’s Jui-Lung Chen double-hill. Rafael Martinez showed Shane Van Boening to the door, and Danny Petralba knocked out Ike Runnels by the largest margin of the evening, 9-2.
With the action back in play Saturday morning, the winners’ side started off with a round of great matches. Sparky Ferrell bested Santos Sambajon Jr. 9-3, and Tony Chohan defeated Mark Haddad 9-4—these were the only matches not be a close finish. Gabe “The Babe” Owen slipped past Jonathan Pinegar 9-7, while Jose Parica and Cliff Joyner each won their matches 9-6.The next round on the winners’ side brought that half of the board to four players. Chohan bested Parica and Ferrell defeated Bill Ganne, both double-hill. Justin Bergman also slipped past Cliff Joyner 9-8, and Owen defeated Ernesto Dominguez 9-7.Back on the one-loss side, Martinez blazed past Jamito 9-4 only to fall to Joyner 9-8. Wiseman slipped past Sambajon Jr. in yet another double-hill battle, only to be eliminated by Banks in the next round. Only one winner from this round was still alive in the one-loss side top eight … Rich Orem, who continues to play strong, defeating three opponents on the one-loss side today including Parica 9-3.Here is what the top eight look like:Winners’ SideTony Chohan v.
