Field Thins at the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships By InsidePOOL StaffThe men’s and women’s fields at the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships have thinned out to 24 each after Wednesday evening’s rounds wrapped up. Held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, the event began on Sunday, May 16 and will conclude on Saturday with the final match.The conclusion of the evening rounds left only four players in each winners’ bracket. Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat, one of the feared Filipino contingent, matched up with Finland’s Mika Immonen and dealt him a stunning 11-1 decision. Two more countrymen met when Alex Pagulayan and Santos Sambajon, Jr., came together, with Sambajon ending up the 11-6 victor. George Breedlove took a trip to the one-loss side of the chart after his 11-9 match with Tony “The Silent Assasin” Robles, and “Rocket” Rodney Morris came out the victor of a nail-biting hill-hill match with last year’s runner-up Francisco Bustamante.
In the women’s division, InsidePOOL Magazine’s 2003 Female Pro Player of the Year, Allison Fisher, advanced after a 9-5 victory over Gerda Hofstatter, while Hsin Huang sent Shin-Mei Lui to the one-loss side after a 9-6 decision. “The Black Widow,” Jeanette Lee, suffered her first loss to former world champion Julie Kelly in a hill-hill match, and Karen “The Irish Invader” Corr sent Monica Webb to the west side after a 9-1 blowout.In the one-loss side matches late in the evening, Luc Salvas advanced over fellow Canadian and left-hander Jeff Kennedy with a tight 11-9 win.
