Fifth and Final Round Ends at North American 8-Ball Open ChampionshipBy Sally P. TimkoOne hundred players started out the first day of the International Pool Tour’s North American 8-Ball Open Championship, held at The Venetian in Las Vegas, but only sixty of them will return for Tuesday’s matches. The other 100 will play tomorrow, with the same number returning the following day.Several players advanced with perfect 4-0 records, including John “Mr. 400” Schmidt. “I’m actually a little tired, but I’m excited now,” Schmidt said with a grin. “I got through that, and I think I’ll be dangerous now, because I’m on even footing with everybody. “I just played pretty solid today,” Moore said modestly after his last match. “I got a few rolls, broke the balls real well, got lucky my opponents missed a few balls … I knew I’d do well if I broke the balls well. I’ve been practicing a lot, but I’ve still got a long road ahead.”When asked what he plans on doing with his day off tomorrow, he smiled and said, “I’ll probably go swimming, hang out in the sunlight. I’ve been indoors for the last two days! I’m going to get some sunshine and maybe drink a cocktail.”Of the hundred players who began today’s event, only sixty will return for Tuesday’s matches.
