Filipinos and Europeans Billiards Players Start off StrongThe Filipinos billiard players cruised through the day’s first round with no problems. Alex Pagulayan bested Tony Chohan 8-6, and Larry Nevel suffered a defeat at the hands of Rodolfo Luat by the same score. Ramil Gallego crushed Hall of Famer Nick Varner 8-2, and Antonio Lining defeated Australian Quinten Hann 8-4. Ronato Alcano, who has demonstrated a tremendous break and a fluid stroke, won 8-6 over the pint-sized Hung Ming Chu. Big-breaking Francisco Bustamante defeated Japan’s Furuta Kazuo 8-6, Jose Parica defeated Nick Van den Berg in a double-hill match, and Efren Reyes won 8-5 over Johnny Archer. The only loss was to Canada’s Edwin Montal, who lost a hill-hill battle against former World Pool Masters champion Tony Drago.Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryThe young Europeans remaining are doing well, especially the Brits. Fellow UK countrymen Imran Majid and Darren Appleton had to play each other in the first round, with Appleton triumphing 8-4, including three break and run-outs. Qualifier Karl Boyes, one of the UK’s best, won his first-round match against Germany’s Joern Kaplan 8-2, and Daryl Peach defeated Yannick Beaufils of France 8-6. Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Niels Feijen, David Alcaide, and Mika Immonen also won their first matches of the day.
Danny Harriman had the first round off this morning and was willing to give a quote regarding the incident last night in which he removed his shoes and climbed up onto the pool table to shoot a ball in the middle of the table. “I was five and oh yesterday--undefeated. We had kinda a bad rule come up, back there in the corner I saw Jose Parica get up on the table. Back home we call it giddyup pool … I play on a five by ten back there, and if you take your shoes off, they allow you to get on the table. It’s kind of a gamblers’ rule, it’s not really professional, but against these best players in the world I’m gonna try to do whatever I can to win.“I couldn’t reach the ball—usually I can get it left-handed. The bridge would have been difficult, too, because it was kind of in a precarious spot, and I’m not real strong with the bridge because I usually shoot left-handed when I can’t reach a shot, but it was just a tricky little shot. We had a little dispute there. Archer … sometimes he’s a real fierce competitor and I am, too, but it was late and we were both tired, been playing all day, a little cranky. I thought he was a little out of line not shaking my hand, even though I agree it’s a bad rule. Well, there is no rule, that’s the thing. Nick Varner did it, they said, and I saw Jose Parica do it, so if those champions are gonna take advantage of that rule … I mean, I’m six foot one, I don’t generally need a crutch but that one particular shot was just sitting perfect for me to get on the table. Johnny didn’t shake my hand so … I hope he will apologize to me. Him and I have never been close buddies, but we have never been enemies either, so I hope that’s the way it stays.”Round 3 GROUP 61D.
