Filipinos and Ladies in Jeopardy at IPT Billiards TournamentThere were a couple of upsets in the fourth round: Oliver Ortmann, who played incredibly strong in his first three matches, lost to Jason Miller 8-4, while Dennis Hatch won 8-6 over Johnny Archer—his first win of the day.Japan’s Goh Takami upset George Breedlove in the fourth round 8-5 but commented, “I’m not exactly running on all cylinders.” He then added, “As far as the event goes, there has never been anything like it, and it’s the best that’s ever been.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryFormer BCA Open winner Tony Robles dealt a stunning 8-3 loss to Alex Pagulayan, saying, “I’ll be honest with you, that’s the best match I’ve played since I joined the IPT. It felt so good, and I knew it was just a matter of time before I caught a gear, and I’ll be honest—if I keep breaking the way I have, I really believe I can win this tournament. I worked on my break for about a month, because at the Venetian I was scared to death to break.
“I’m three and one, but I’m not taking it lightly, I’m definitely going to shoot to win and play my heart out. I’ll be sick if I lose my a half-percentage point. I don’t want to leave it to the judges.”Former U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen met IPT qualifier Shane Van Boening and ended up the 8-6 winner, saying, “Yeah, I won, the table was breaking tough, and when I made balls there were at least three or four problem balls. There was only one run-out the whole set. But I’m four and oh, so I’m in. I’m playing horrible today, though—I’m struggling to get into a groove. My execution ain’t real good right now, I’m a little jittery. I think the day off yesterday hurt me—now it’s almost like the first day again and I’m always shaky on the first day. But I’m just gonna keep fighting, and hopefully I’ll get into a groove. I think I’ll play better tomorrow.”Surprisingly, many of the Filipinos are teetering on the edge of elimination. Reyes has a 2-2 score so far today and will meet Fabio Petroni in the last round. Jose Parica, leader of the Filipino invasion, has the same record and will play Alejandro Carvajal of Chile next. Pagulayan has two wins and plays Vincent Facquet, while Santos Sambajon Jr. also has two wins and meets Sarah Ellerby in the fifth round. Marlon Manalo and Warren Kiamco each have only one win. The only one completely out of danger is Francisco Bustamante with four wins. Most of the ladies are in danger as well. Ellerby is 1-3, while Kelly Fisher is 1-3 and meets Hiroshi Takenaka in the fifth round. Loree Jon Jones has yet to win a match. Allison Fisher and Jasmin Ouschan both have two matches out of four.
