Final Four Winners’-Bracket Matches Set at IPT Qualifier CThe third IPT qualification (IPT Qualifier C) event has resumed at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA, Saturday morning. The winners’ bracket has narrowed to eight players after this morning’s round, which is set to begin tonight at 5:00 p.m.Reigning world champion Chia-Ching Wu of Taiwan suffered his first loss today in his match against Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann. Wu started off with a 3-1 lead, but the German former world champion won the next four in a row. The 16-year-old took the next three to gain a one-game margin, but Ortmann swept five in a row—the last two break and run-outs—for a 10-6 victory.Phoenix, AZ, action man Scott Frost dealt Sam Frangie a 10-6 loss, and Go Takami sent Clent McCullough to the one-loss side 10-2. Canadian Eric Hjorliefson won 10-6 against Hiroshi Takenaka, while Mark Trainer bested Filipino Warren Kiamco 10-5. England’s Richard Broumpton, now a Florida resident, won a messy match against George Breedlove in which they traded games in pairs until Broumpton ultimately won 10-8. Dennis Orcollo allowed his opponent Michael Schmidt of Germany a few wins before he won that match 10-5.
Central California’s Arturo Rivera matched up with one-pocket master Cliff Joyner of North Carolina. With Rivera leading 4-2, Joyner went on a rampage, winning the next five in a row to take a 7-4 lead. Rivera, who complained of flu-like symptoms and a pain in his side, only allowed Joyner one additional rack before making an awesome comeback to win the match 10-8.Mike “The Mouth” Sigel is in fine form this morning, having already played two sets of hopeful eliminated players races to 8. The players’ names were drawn out of a hat, and if they win the set, they receive free entry fees to the remaining two qualifiers. So far, Sigel has successfully thwarted them, winning against Vince MacIntyre 8-4, Michael Enters 8-1, Rey Rendon 8-1, and Don McClelland 8-4.
