Final Four to Play on Sunday at the U.S. OpenBy InsidePOOL StaffThe final four remaining players will convene on Sunday at 1 p.m. to see who will walk away with top honors at the 29th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships in Chesapeake, VA. At Saturday’s 7 p.m. round, the four players left in the winners’ bracket matched up, with Francisco Bustamante and Thorsten Hohmann in one match and Mika Immonen and Gabe Owen in the other. Immonen and Owen, who hails from Tulsa, OK, stayed neck and neck for the first half, but Owen pulled away to a 7-4 lead after Immonen scratched and left a hanging 2-9 combo. It went to 10-7 after a foul by Immonen; Owen came up empty on his next break, but when Immonen scratched on the 4, Owen ran out for the 11-7 win.
Former world champion Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann of Germany only allowed Bustamante a two-game lead throughout their match before he overtook him and turned the tables at 8-all. Bustamante missed several key shots in the following two racks, giving Hohmann the outs he needed to win their match 11-8. In the one-loss side, Corey Deuel played a smooth set to take a stunning 10-3 lead against Finland’s Immonen, who made only a couple of errors to earn his position. Zeroing in on the win, Deuel played a fantastic position shot for the 5 ball on the top rail that sent the crowd over the edge only to dog a simple shot on the 9 ball. Both players seemed astonished, but Immonen put a more respectable gap in the score before Deuel finally registered an 11-6 victory.Niels Feijen and Francisco Bustamante battled late into the night in a match that saw the players trade games to the end. Feijen reached a 10-8 lead over his opponent only to foul and give him ball in hand to narrow the gap to one game. Bustamante broke and dropped the 9 ball in the next rack to knot the score on the hill, to the excitement of the crowd. After trading safeties on the 1 ball, Bustamante fouled, driving his cue into the floor in irritation. Feijen played a smooth out until he missed the 6 ball, which slipped into the side pocket. From there, Feijen cleanly pocketed the remaining three balls for his hill-hill win.Feijen and Deuel will meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. to determine fourth place, while Hohmann and Owen will play in the hot seat match.
