First Day of Joss Tour Finale Ends The matches ran smoothly the first day of the Joss Tour Finale. This is the end of the seventh season for the successful Joss Tour, a northeast regional favorite that draws players from around the country. At every Joss tournament, there is a brief players meeting at the commencement to go over the rules as well as give recognition to the loyal sponsors who keep the Joss machine in tune. Jump cues are not allowed, but a player may jump a ball with their shooting cue. The loser racks the balls, and the breaker must break from the box in the race-to-9 double-elimination format.
One of the feature matches that drew a large crowd occurred between UPA Rookie of the Year Mike Davis and veteran Earl Strickland. Mike was donning a black “Hustlin” USA brand collared shirt, a favorite of the young players today, and always shoots with a glove. Davis sat in his chair stoically and could only watch as Strickland took an early lead, breaking flawlessly and running racks. Davis fought back hard and managed to score six games. When Strickland was on the hill, he found himself snookered on the 6 ball. He made a tough two-rail kick shot and slapped it in the side pocket, going on to win the set 9-6.There were some early upsets: Danny Hall knocked New Yorker Frankie Hernandez on the “B” side in a tight 9-7 match. Canadian Luc Salvas defeated Ryan McCreesh 9-7 and thrilled the crowd when he jumped two balls in a row with ease.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
