First-Match Nerves Don’t Matter At AllThough players keep saying that nerves are getting to them in the first match, these are the billiard players who are winning their matches. Teddy Garrahan defeated Florida Pro Tour director John Di Toro in a hill-hill nail-biter in the first round and then commented, “Well, it’s the first match of the tournament—of the biggest tournament—so I was a little shaky ... everyone is, though, I don't care who they are. So I played good for being shaky, I felt like once the nerves release I’m going to start playing a lot better and stringing more racks together … I think I should play better the next match, because now I am feeling better and you have to get into a euphoric state.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryDiToro was in less of a euphoric state after the match, simply stating, “He played perfect. He didn't miss a ball. I broke the last rack and scratched—it got kicked in, and he ran out hill-hill.”
Monica Webb upset Chicago’s Marco Marquez with an 8-3 win, claiming three break and run-outs as well. “I played good. This is my second IPT event, and I finally won a match. The first event a lot of my matches were hill-hill, and I couldn’t finish it off. I’ve had more time to prepare now and I feel a lot more confident … it went great. I started with three break and runs to put the heat on him and get him cold sitting in his chair. That’s something good to do when it’s winner break. The break was doing well, I was making a few balls. I feel good, like that was one of my toughest opponents, and I am looking forward to the next match, just taking it one at a time.”The much-anticipated appearance of Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan, who won the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championships over Allison Fisher last May, caused a stir, with her meeting Pete Fusco in the first round. Though Fusco won the first two racks, it wasn’t long before it was a scrap, with the lead going back and forth until Fusco was up 5-3. At that point, though, Ouschan apparently decided that she’d had enough, and she took the next five racks in a row for the 8-5 win.Allison Fisher was less fortunate in her first-round match against Hui-Kai Hsia. Hsia began the match with two break and run-outs and then won another three racks for an automatic 5-0 lead. Fisher only managed to put two games under her belt before Hsia finished off the match 8-2.Mike “The Mouth” Sigel suffered a first-round loss to Sweden’s Helena Thornfeldt 8-4 and will face Howard Vickery in the 12:30 p.m. round. Hall of Fame member Robin Dodson met with Edwin Montal and put up a good fight but ended up with an 8-6 loss.Round 1 GROUP 1T. HohmannS. MooreL. JonesW. KiamcoJ. RaneyGROUP 2M. ManaloC. WilliamsS.
