First Winners’-Bracket Matches Wrapped Up at IPT Qualifier DThe first round of the winners’-bracket matches have finished, leaving only eight players. The second round has just begun, which will conclude the day for four winners and make for a long day for the others.George Breedlove, who claims to only play a couple of times per year, is still in the winners’ bracket, having defeated Bellflower runner-up Eric Hjorliefson 10-3. Brit Karl Boyes ran over opponent Beau Runninger 10-1, and Antonio Lining of the Philippines sent San Diego’s Dan Wallace to the one-loss side with a 10-4 win. Warren Kiamco, also Filipino, dealt Chris Melling of the UK his first loss 10-8, but England’s Imran Majid remains undaunted, besting Richard Molineiro 10-2. Furuta Kazuo won 10-3 over Goh Takami, and Gary Abood sent Florida’s Robb Saez to the one-loss side 10-4. So far today, there have been three players who have earned $500 for making the 8 ball on the break: Cliff Joyner while playing Hiroshi Takenaka, Robert Wilson while playing Sandor Tot, and Kevin Becker while playing Kevin Brown. Joyner also successfully ran seven racks in a row in competition, earning a whopping $5,000 bonus. Many more excellent players have been eliminated, including Scott Frost, Jason Kirkwood, and Jeff White. The second round of the winners’-bracket matches begins this afternoon, and it will be the last in that bracket until Sunday. Only four players in each bracket will return Sunday morning.
