Fisher (no, not that one) Wins West Coast ClassicBy “Fast Mikie” McCaffertyAfter several top finishes in the last year on the WPBA Classic Tour, Kelly Fisher broke through to capture her first WPBA Classic Tour championship by taking down the Mueller Recreational Products West Coast Classic at the Viejas Casino in San Diego, CA. Although favored to win at the start of the event, Allison Fisher, the number-one ranked woman player in the WPBA, was knocked out of the competition with losses to number-two ranked Karen Corr 9-5 and number-seven ranked Gerda Hofstatter 9-7. Up until the final match, Hofstatter defeated everyone she faced, even winning an earlier match against the unseeded Kelly Fisher, but Fisher would not accept defeat and came back from the one-loss side to get her revenge with a score of 7-3. Fisher performed masterfully, missing just four shots in the televised final match before a capacity crowd at Viejas Casino outside San Diego.
Both before and after the match, Hofstatter appeared distracted by her stroke and remarked, “I’ve been having trouble with my mechanics. I changed a few things, and it just wasn’t feeling right.” Kelly Fisher earned a $10,000 paycheck for her first win in her first year on tour. Hofstatter picked up $7,000 for second place and Vivian Villarreal took home $5,500 for third.Kelly Fisher, born in Carlisle, England, came to the USA in just last year after a spectacular, but underpaid, snooker career in Europe, following the very successful path of Allison Fisher and Karen Corr.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the WPBA.
