Fisher Successfully Defends Billiards Titleby InsidePOOL StaffAllison Fisher successfully defended her WPBA U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship title against fellow countrywoman Kim Shaw this week at the Sandia Hotel & Casino in Albuquerque, NM.Fisher did not suffer a defeat throughout the event, which has recently switched over to a new format. With eight players from the winners’ bracket and eight from the one-loss side returning for the shortened race-to-7 televised matches in a single-elimination format, it’s anyone’s tournament at that point.
After besting hard hitter Helena Thornfeldt 9-6 in her charge to the finals, Fisher met up with the effusive Vivian “The Texas Tornardo” Villareal, whom she defeated 7-5 in the shortened race. Shaw, also coming through the winners’ bracket without a loss, met up with the WPBA’s number-two player, Karen Corr of Ireland, and managed to eke out a hill-hill victory. Shaw progressed to face the number-three player, Monica Webb, who had just defeated Julie Kelly in a double-hill match. She triumphed again, this time by a 7-4 margin. In the final match-up against fellow Brit Fisher, she put up a good fight and got 5 racks under her belt before Fisher swept by with a 7-5 win.Results:1st Allison Fisher2nd Kim Shaw3rd Monica WebbVivian Villareal5th Karen CorrJulie KellyPam TreadwayHelena Thornfeld9th Wendy JansKim WhiteMelissa LittleKelly FisherMelissa HerndonTracie HinesSarah EllerbyJennifer Chen
