Florida Billiards Finale Underwayby Rick DavisThe Seminole Florida Pro Tour season finale, now the Steve Mizerak Florida State Championships, got underway December 16 with a stacked 56-player field. The two-day event offers 10-ball double-elimination action taking place at Capone’s in Spring Hill, FL. Touring pros and international stars such as Corey Deuel, Troy Frank, Steve Moore, Rodney Morris, Robb Saez and others all came to compete in the toughest Southeast action.
Kicking the event off, the opening round had plenty of excitement as Corey “The Prince of Pool” Deuel came out on top of a double-hill match against Thorsten Hohmann. Not to be outdone by the favorites, tour regulars Donnie Mills and Chris Bartram each drilled their opponents 7-1. The biggest surprise of the day has been player of the year, Will Bilbrey, who, after winning the last two tour stops went two and out from 7-4 and 7-3 losses to Troy Frank and Jason Klatt, respectively. Shawn Michaels, a local South Florida young gun, defeated Gabe “The Babe” Owen double-hill, then Owen forfeited out of the event after failing to show for his next match against Richard Broumpton. Afterwards, the excited Michaels said, “I dogged a seven but then tied it up. He got to the hill then I tied it up…I wound up with a lucky roll but that’s how pool goes, what are you gonna do?”At this point, it’s certainly anyone’s game as the winners’ side has one round to complete while the one-loss side has two. Tomorrow will bring back 24 players all hunting for their share of the $15,000-added prize fund. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
