Four Players Remain in IPT QualifierThe first round of the winners’-bracket matches Sunday morning were uneven at best. Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann completely dominated his match against Scott Frost. Though Frost had a small early lead, Ortmann managed to take advantage of his opponent’s errors and won the match 10-4.Dennis Orcollo of the Philippines went up against Goh Takami in the second winners’-side match, in which Orcollo cleared the first rack and ran the next four for a 5-0 lead. There weren’t too many opportunities for Takami, and Orcollo swept the match 10-3.Hiroshi Takenaka ran the first four racks in his left-side match against Karl Boyes of the UK. The crestfallen Boyes took two games, but Takenaka took three, bringing the score to 7-2. Takenaka only allowed his opponent one more game before winning 10-3.
The closest match was between Eric Hjorliefson and Warren Kiamco, in which the Canadian took control of the first half, taking an 8-2 lead. Kiamco put a few more games under his belt, but the Canadian player ended up winning the match 10-7.In the next one-loss side round, Hiroshi Takenaka and Goh Takami matched up and traded the first four games. At that point, Takami won the next six in a row, four of those break and run-outs, to reach an 8-2 lead. Takenaka attempted a comeback, winning four of the next five racks, but it was too little too late, and Takami ultimately won the match 10-6.The second one-loss side match was a bitter one for Scott “The Freezer” Frost. He gained an early 4-2 lead, but then the Canadian put four games under his belt. The one-pocket player kept struggling with his break, and Hjorliefson kept running out. The score reached 8-5 Hjorliefson, but Frost held on. Neither player was at his best and each made several errors. Hjorliefson reached the hill with Frost at 6, and then the Arizona player staged a comeback, tying it at double-hill. He made a ball on the break and was looking good, but he blew an easy cut shot into the side and handed the match to Hjorliefson.Oliver Ortmann and Dennis Orcollo will begin their winners’-side final match, while Goh Takami and Eric Hjorliefson will start in the one-loss side imminently. The winner of the Ortmann/Orcollo match will earn his IPT card, while the loser will play the winner of the Takami/Hjorliefson match.Visit Inside POOL Magazine for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
