Four Remain in the Winners’ Bracket on Florida Pro Tourby Rick DavisPlay on Sunday started with most players being cautious of the fast tables. “Rocket” Rodney Morris faced off with Dave “The Red Rocket” Broxson on the winners’ side. Morris said, “The table was very confusing because it was ten times faster than anything else in the room.” When asked about his feelings on the match, he added, “I didn’t feel confident until the last ball went in. We were both confused, but I guess I was less confused than him.” Meanwhile, Richie Richeson defeated Jason Kirkwood, Dennis Hatch bested Carlos Viera, and Troy Frank defeated Michael Destefeno. Those players who lost in this round now move to the one-loss side, where the worst they can finish is in the 9/12th place bracket.View Brackets hereOn the one-loss side, Butch “The Butcher” Croft defeated Ricky Sanchez in a see-saw battle. This was Sanchez’s first appearance on the tour in two years, and of the group of players he came with from Miami, he was the only one to finish in the money.
Croft also was stunned by the speed of the table and rails, although he offered a unique insight into his play when he said, “I try to play object-ball safeties. Putting the object ball in a specific spot and then using less power and spin on the cue ball to leave my opponents long shots, banks, and kicks.” Other early action saw Sparky Ferrell defeat Hall of Famer Nick Varner in a double-hill match. Ferrell, who traveled down from Jacksonville, NC, placed fourth in last week’s tour stop, and it seems he has his sights just as high this week. Also, Chris Bartram defeated Neil Fujiwara, and Robb Saez bested Scotty Townsend. Varner, Fujiwara, Townsend, and Sanchez received $300 each for their 13/16th place finish. The next round of play moved the one-loss side from eight players to four. Ferrell defeated Broxson, while Saez defeated Viera. Bartram bested his traveling partner from Michigan, Kirkwood, while the final match saw Destafano defeat Croft. Broxson, Kirkwood, Viera, and Croft walked away with $450 for their 9/12th place finish. Two matches remain on the winners’ side of the top eight: Morris versus Richeson, and Hatch against Frank, while Ferrell faces Bartram and Saez meets Destafano on the one-loss side.
