Gabriels Open at the Super Billiards Expo Begins!The Super Billiards Expo began on Thursday, March 16, and the Gabriels Open 8-Ball Professional Players Championship brought 60 pros out to compete in the $20,000-added event. Surprisingly, no Filipino players made it to this tournament, but there are plenty of other international players, such as Hiroshi Takenaka and Goh Takami of Japan, Russia’s Evgeny Stalev, Mika Immonen of Finland, and Ralf Souquet, hailing from Germany. Recent IPT addition Shane Van Boening is present but suffered a loss to Corey Harper of Los Angeles, CA. Crowd favorite Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich is also on the west side of the chart, having lost his first match to Dennis Hatch and then stayed alive by defeating Jon Macias. Former world champion Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann also lost his first match, coming up against Tony “Cha-Ching” Chohan of Sacramento, CA. Chohan was also responsible for sending 2005 runner-up Fabio Petroni to the one-loss side in the first round. Archer, who won this title consecutively in 2003 and 2004, is still in the winners’ bracket, along with Richard Broumpton, Robb Saez, Mike Davis, Troy Frank, and Charlie Williams, among others. Defending champion Shawn “The Love Sponge” Putnam is also unscathed as yet and will play Harper this evening. After the 8:30 p.m. round in the right side, only eight players will remain undefeated.The Valley Forge Convention Center is crammed with all types of pool fans, vendors, and shoppers, while the amateur events are entering full swing. Defending champion of the massive Amateur Open division B.J. Ussery has been sighted, as have many other fearsome amateurs. There are four amateur divisions—Open, Womens, Seniors, and Juniors—as well as a Second-Chance Scramble, Pro-Am Bar Table Challenge, and Artistic Pool Masters Championship.
