Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty at the IPT Billiards EventIn the U.S. corner, “Rocket” Rodney Morris is 4-0 for the day, winning 8-5 over Karl Boyes, and will meet fellow American Corey Deuel in the final round. With two wins for the day, Deuel would most likely need to win to advance. “Today is four and oh!” exclaimed the Hawaiian. “I’m just playing good and getting the rolls. A combination of the guys playing bad and at the right time. My breaks have been pretty good, I just try to hit them firm. Not out of my capabilities, just hard enough to move them around and park the cue ball.“I’m in for tomorrow, I'm in the final six. It’s very exciting. I lost in the final thirty-six last time. The break did it this time—I have been working on it religiously, that’s all I worked on.”IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship ForumsVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery
How does he keep himself in shape for this kind of Iron Man tournament? “I’m just eating good and working out a lot, not draining myself between matches. After a match I just walk away and try to take my mind off pool. Every night I have just enough energy to have a bowl of soup and go right to bed.”Two of the three Germans are poised to advance: Though Thomas Engert lost his third match in the fourth round to Mick Hill 8-4, Oliver Ortmann bested Alex Pagulayan 8-4, while Ralf Souquet handed Dennis Orcollo his first loss of the day 8-5. Efren Reyes continues to lead his group with three wins, just dealing Dimitri Jungo an 8-3 defeat. Fellow Filipino Francisco Bustamante squeaked by in his match against Hui-Kai Hsia, winning double-hill despite a “fan” flashing him with his camera. “Well,” Bustamante recalled, “when I was shooting the ball I was looking at the other balls, scared to make a foul again. And I just go like that,” as he imitates stroking his cue forward, “and masse the ball. I was shooting the ball and someone took a shot of me with a camera. That’s why I stopped and got lucky I didn’t miss the shot. I saw the flash.”Mika Immonen dealt Charlie Williams his fourth loss of the day 8-6, scoring four break and runs in the process. “Yeah, I managed to win,” Immonen confirmed. “I was down the whole match, but at six-five he came dry on the break, and I ran the last three racks. I feel I’m playing good as long as I make a ball on the break. I’m not in yet, I gotta play Ralf for the guarantee. If I beat Ralf I’m in.”Then Immonen laughed. “A walk in the park!”Immonen caught up with Gabe Owen to discuss his bracket, and Owen was surprised to hear from Immonen that Niels Feijen lost to Harriman 8-5. Owen said jokingly, “Harriman! He's not even in it—he’s just a spoiler.” Immonen replied, “Well, he didn’t spoil anything for me.”In Group 81, it is likely that Efren Reyes and Oliver Ortmann will advance. Both have three wins, and even if Dimitri Jungo or Alex Pagulayan were to tie with them, it would be unlikely that they would have the games-won percentage necessary to move on.Group 80 has three players with three wins: Mika Immonen, Ralf Souquet, and Dennis Orcollo. Souquet and Immonen will play each other in the final round, while Orcollo plays Niels Feijen. The winner of the Souquet/Immonen match will advance for certain, but whether Orcollo will need to win or not is uncertain.Rodney Morris leads Group 79, but who will join him tomorrow from that group is a mystery. There are three choices: Francisco Bustamante, Corey Deuel, and David Alcaide. Deuel plays Morris, but Bustamante plays Boyes and Alcaide will meet Hui-Kai Hsia. It is impossible to predict who will join Morris in advancing from Group 79.Quick LinksPlayer StatsPrize Money Breakdown Round 5 GROUP 79K. BoyesF. BustamanteH. HsiaC. DeuelR. MorrisD.
