Grau Runs Unscathed in Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tourby Matthew PingorSyracuse, NY - Women love scars, but Dave Grau will have to do without as he played without scars, undefeated, to win his first first-place title upon defeating Gary Empey. In anticipation of the Turning Stone Classic, a field of 32 players came out to Cap’s Cue Club of Syracuse, NY, for the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour’s February 11-12 $4,060-added event. In the hot seat match, Grau faced Empey for the first time. Empey usually doesn’t lay down this easy, but even if he was standing, that would not matter. Grau played with an intensity that would make anyone envious. Capping the talent on his game, Grau secured the hot seat 9-5. The quarterfinal saw familiar Joss face Dennis Hatch face Tom D’Alfonso. Both players kept eyes on this match as they took it through a brier patch of 16 games, with Hatch winning 9-7.
Hatch moved on to play Empey in this match, but he could have done better as Empey went on to win 9-5. Now in the finals, Empey had a chance at thwarting Grau; however, Grau negotiated the table in a way that Empy could not handle, winning the finals in the first set and defining the second set as moot, winning 9-4 and taking home the healthy sum of $1,200.Results:1st David Grau2nd Gary Empy3rd Dennis Hatch4th Tom D’Alfonso5th Mike ZuglanHonsgsavaday Vongxay7th Bruce CarrollKirk RutherfordVisit Inside POOL Magazine for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
