Gutierrez and Petrosino Secure the Fast Eddie’s Season OpenerFast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour / Houston, TXby Rick DavisThe January 20-21 weekend ushered in the first billiards event of the Fast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour, which got underway at Fast Eddie’s in Houston, TX, with some of the best competition in the Central U.S. The 67-player field in the open division was owned by David Gutierrez, who went undefeated, while the 18-player field in the ladies’ event saw a surprise comeback by Terry Petrosino to take the title.
In the open division, Sunday evening sifted the field down to only a few. On the winners’ side, Jui Lung Chen found his way past Rafael Martinez 9-7, while Gutierrez bested Sylver Ochoa 9-6. This set up the hot seat match between Gutierrez and Chen. Initially, a seesaw battle, it eventually tipped towards Gutierrez, who sent Chen to the left side of the chart after the 9-5 defeat. Over on the one-loss side, Rene Rendon was awaiting Martinez as he traveled west, but Martinez had a surprise ready as he eliminated Rendon 7-4. Nearby, Ochoa was hoping for the same outcome, but David Parker was looking for a comeback of his own and knocked out Ochoa double-hill. In the quarterfinals, Martinez had a solid match and eliminated Parker 7-4, and then in the semifinals he gave out a final pink slip, defeating Chen 7-5. Gutierrez got to rest up before the finals, thanks to not taking a loss, while Martinez took the long way around to reach the finals. The match found its way to double-hill where Gutierrez claimed the match to take down first the event of the season.In the ladies’ division, Ricki Casper slipped by Michell Cortez 7-6 in the hot seat match, while on the one-loss side a comeback was in motion. Terry Petrosino fought her way to the quarterfinals where she drilled Audra Carter 5-1, then taking slightly longer, eliminated Cortex 5-2 in the semifinals.
