Hall and Vidal Clean Up
Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour / Morgantown, WV, and Youngstown, OH
by Rick Davis
The March 3-4 weekend brought a pair of billiards events from the Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour, held at Strokerz Billiard Pub in Morgantown, WV, and The Q-Club in Youngstown, OH. Delbert Hall recovered from an early loss to claim the first event, while Mark Vidal swept up going undefeated in the second event.
With Saturday’s action drawing in 26 players, the field was controlled by two strong shooters. Shane Jackson found his way to the hot seat match, where he faced and defeated Jim Udischas 7-5, but the crowd was watching Hall as he clawed his way back. After an early loss to Udischas, Hall took four one-loss side wins then, after eliminating Udischas 5-3 in the semifinals, met Jackson for a true double-elimination showdown. After a controlled 7-4 win in the first set the pair grinded to double-hill until Hall crossed the finish line by a nose, taking the second set 5-4 to win the event.
The next day, with the action relocated, a 30-player field gathered for another day of competition. Like the previous event, the tournament chart was owned by a pair of sharp shooters by the name of Vidal and Bill McCollim, who bulleted their way to the hot seat match. Keeping up with the plan of total domination, Vidal destroyed McCollim 6-2 to reach the finals. McCollim then eliminated Skip Shumate 6-4 in the semifinals for a final crack at Vidal. With the double-elimination format, it was an uphill battle and Vidal was ready to defend himself. Although the set went double-hill, the 6-5 score in Vidal’s favor gave him the title after a great day of play.
