Helms and Lawless Undefeated in Season Finaleby Rick Davis, Inside POOL MagazineThe season finale of the Tiger Planet Pool 8-Ball Tour was owned by Paul Helms and Kathleen Lawless, who blew through the open and ladies’ divisions undefeated. Taking place at Fast Break Café in Sterling, VA, the December 10 weekend brought out a strong field.
In the open division, Helms and Alan Buty quickly found their way to the hot seat match, where the momentum stayed with Helms as he coasted past 5-2. On the one-loss side, Jim Henson nearly shut out Harry Belpilar blazing through the quarterfinal match 4-1. Next, Henson met Buty as the action slowed to a grinding halt while the double-hill match unfolded. Henson escaped the semifinals 4-3 to face Helms in a one-set final match to 7. The extended set kept close at first, but as the racks went down, Helms expanded his lead until defeating Henson 7-5.Over in the ladies’ division, the last several rounds went down in rapid succession. In the hot seat match, Lawless scorched Bethany Kurtz 4-1, while Marcie Hanisee shot just as well eliminating Natalie Posey 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Hanisee advanced to face Kurtz, and after a quick 3-1 match, she proceeded to the finals where Lawless was waiting. There both players struggled as the match tipped back and forth and then, tied at 4-all and only the 8 left on the table, Lawless took the match that literally came down to the final ball. This was the final event for the tour this season. They expect to announce the 2007 season early next year and start up in February. Also, all of the host rooms and tour staff would like to thank Nick Prinsloo, who, after many years of service, is leaving the tour.Open Results:1st Paul Helms2nd Jim Henson3rd Alan Buty4th Harry Belpilar5th Joe PierceDoug Whiting7th Richard BarneyRichard Keefe Ladies’ Results:1st Kathleen Lawless2nd Marcie Hanisee3rd Bethany Kurtz4th Natalie Posey
