Hohmann Advances While Pagulayan Moves to the “B” SideBy InsidePOOL StaffThe 29th Annual U.S. Open continues in Chesapeake, VA, with the top seeds coming out on top in the winners’ round evening matches with few exceptions. one notable exception, however, would be Alex Pagulayan’s 11-8 loss to Nicholas Guimond, which sent the newly crowned world champion to the one-loss side.Thorsten Hohmann, the 2003 World Pool Championship titleholder, met with Ryan “The Genie Man” McCreesh in Wednesday’s evening round. McCreesh, who was responsible for dealing Keith McCready his first defeat, started off strong by taking the lead with a break and run, but when Hohmann dropped the 9 on the break to take a 3-2 lead, the tides turned on the Maryland player. Hohmann reached a 6-2 lead on his opponent before McCreesh got back in the game. After trading several racks, the two were at 7-5 Hohmann when McCreesh missed a straight-in 9 ball. The German inched ahead to a 10-8 lead after that, and when McCreesh missed the 3 in the final rack, Hohmann cleared the table to win 11-8.
Jeremy “Double J” Jones, who suffered his first defeat against Virginia State 9-Ball Champion Chris Loar the evening prior, played a good match against the BCA Juniors 14 and Under Champion, Chris Futrell. Futrell, who is sponsored by Q Master Billiards along with 15-year-old Curtis Coleman, kept with the defending champion for much of the match. Finally, when the score reached 7-6 Jones, the Texan pulled ahead and took the win 11-6.In other winners’ bracket matches, Luc Salvas of Canada defeated Allen Hopkins 11-8, Francisco Bustamante won his match against Eddie Galati 11-4, Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
