Hundal, Hohmann Win First RoundOnly 36 of the original 200 players at the North American Open 8-Ball Championship returned for today’s matches. Players today are guaranteed $17,000, which leaps to $30,000 tomorrow. One of the first matches to finish was the Raj Hundal/Rodney Morris rematch of the 2005 World Pool Masters finals. “It went great—I ran the first two out of the block, had a chance to run three but made an error, and Rodney capitalized but then broke and scratched. I never really gave him a chance. I think I broke and ran five racks in that match, so I played real good on him and beat him eight-two.”IPT discussion forumDay 5 image galleryMatch scheduleWhen asked how he felt about the rest of the day, he said, “I feel good because I just creeped in the backdoor yesterday in the most naughtiest of ways possible. But I’m here, I’m here to play, starting off the day real good, just beat a good friend of mine eight-two, you know—one of the world’s most greatest players, Rodney Morris, you can’t ask for anymore.”
Another European who won by a wide margin was Thorsten Hohmann over Earl Strickland in one of the televised matches this morning. “I won eight-three—I was supposed to win eight-one. My break was working for me almost every time, and I had nice patterns and layout—he was trying to shark me, saying I was playing slow, but that’s not true. The very last game I had a very tough shot—the eight had to pass one of his balls and I had the wrong angle, not one of my favorite shots, and I just missed it." Hohmann added, “I started off playing slow the first day and I’m getting better and better. Yesterday I had one of my best matches and now against Earl. I’m confident and enjoying my tournament here and every match I play.”Also finishing with lopsided scores, Australia’s former snooker star Quinten Hann bested Nick Van den Berg 8-2, while Marlon Manalo won by the same score over Sandor Tot of Serbia.Round 4 Group 74Group 75C.
