It All Comes Down to the Last RoundIt’s too early to tell for many of the players whether or not they will advance to tomorrow’s rounds, but for some, it’s almost a certainty.Thorsten Hohmann and Nick Van den Berg were playing on one of the televised tables. Hohmann had two wins and Van den Berg had none. At hill-hill, Van den Berg was clearing the table but missed his last stripe, the 14, a few inches above the corner pocket. Crushed, he sat down and watched as Hohmann dished up.IPT discussion forumDay 5 image galleryMatch schedule“Again, I made a comeback like in the match before,” Hohmann commented. “I was lucky again—Nick missed the shot because the ball skidded on him. I don’t know, I’m not as consistent. I had some good matches, some tough run-outs, and then some bad mistakes and unforced errors.”
In the same group, Dee Adkins just won hill-hill over Earl Strickland—Adkins, Strickland, and Ronato Alcano have two wins, and Quinten Hann and Hohmann have three. “Rocket” Rodney Morris and Jason Kirkwood, both in the same group, only have one win for the day. Daryl Peach just defeated Corey Deuel hill-hill, earning his third win of the day with Deuel at two. In that same group, Alex Lely and Sandor Tot are in danger of extinction. Mika Immonen has no wins and almost certainly will not advance—in his group, Dennis Orcollo and Rodolfo Luat are the leaders. Marcus Chamat is one of two players in his group with three wins and is almost sure to advance. In his last round, he defeated Rodney Morris 8-6. “I played okay—I was nervous,” Chamat recounted, “every match at this point is big so it’s hard to play loose. I hope I will make it through, but our group is tough and you never know. Today I broke better, but it’s hard. I like the format—I like to play many matches and long hours, so it suits me.”Efren Reyes’s group is a nightmare to try to predict who will advance. Reyes just came off of an 8-6 win over Francisco Bustamante, and now both have two wins each. Ivica Putnik is the leader of their group with three. Evgeny Stalev is 3 for 4 going into the last round, having bested Raj Hundal 8-4 in the fourth round. When asked about his day so far, Stalev replied, “Three wins, one loss. Every match is tough, and you have to win. The break is tough … maybe thirty-five percent for this tournament.”Round 4 Group 74Group 75C. DeuelM. ManaloD. PeachA. LelyS. TotD. AppletonGroup 76D.
