Jason Miller Wins 9-Ball Banks Division at DCC By InsidePOOL StaffIn the finals of the 9-ball banks division at the Sixth Annual Derby City Classic, Jason Miller triumphed over local favorite John Brumback. Miller, a young gun out of Dayton, OH, took two sets to defeat the Lexington, KY, resident to take first position in the race for the All-Around Champion honors.Brumback earned his way to the finals by defeating a score of talented players, as there was a total of 404 entrants in the banks division. Earlier on Monday he met defending champion Danny "The Springfield Flash" Harriman, who suffered his first loss to Pittsburgh native Jerry Slivka on Sunday evening. They played on feature Table 28, and Brumback won the first set by a stunning 3-0.
The mustachioed Brumback received a bye in the next round, while Glen "Piggybanks" Rodgers and Jason Miller played to stay alive, as each one was on his last bullet. Having just defeated Rodgers in the previous round, Miller did not seem to be intimidated by the Chicago, IL, banks player. Rodgers made nothing on the break, and Miller banked 5 and out, and then broke and banked another 5 and out to put the score at 2-0 Miller. He missed his first and second innings at the table in the third game, but after Rodgers scored 1 and then made an illegal shot, Miller banked another 5 and out to win the match 3-0 in less than 15 minutes.Miller, a Derby City rookie, had to defeat Brumback twice to earn the championship title. The first set went to the hill in the race to 3, with each player making some incredible and amazing shots. In the last game, Miller made a ball on the break but missed a long straight-back bank. The players traded points until, knotted at 2, Miller got control of the table and banked 3 and out for the 5-2, 3-2 win. After a short break, the do-or-die final match began, with each player on his last bullet. Brumback scored the first game with a 5-4 win, and Miller fought back to tie at 1 apiece with a 5-0 drubbing. Miller reached the hill with another quick 5-2 victory after a rattled long bank by Brumback to make the score 2-1. The last game lasted quite a bit longer than the rest had, and the players traded innings frequently, rarely scoring a point. At 4-all, Brumback deliberated over a tough two-railer, shot it, and missed, leaving a long bank for Miller, who spiked it in with never a doubt for the 3-1 win.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
