Johnny Archer Wins at VF Brunswick ChampionshipA stunning turn of events in the Men's Professional Brunswick Pro Players Championships at Valley Forge led to a win by Johnny Archer in the finals with Rodney Morris. After being defeated by Morris in the hot seat match earlier, which was a hill match, Archer went on to play against Jose Parica in the match for third place. Archer played deliberately and cautiously, which paid off with a 10-6 victory.Morris kept the crowd entertained during the finals with his facial expressions and his outbursts, but Archer kept with him game by game, slowly but surely. With the sounds of deconstruction in the background as the Super Billiards Expo began to close down, the score was brought to 9-all in a race to 10 by Archer playing a superb 4-9 combo. Morris got two balls on the break, made a nice shot on the 2 ball, and then played the 4 ball too soft, allowing it to rest in the jaws. With new life, Archer ran out to the 7 ball, and Morris conceded. Archer's take was $10,000 for first place, while Morris got $5,000 for second.
In the women's round robin event, Karen Corr triumphed over Helena Thornfeldt in the finals. The format was a race to 6, two sets each, and a one-game tie-breaker if necessary. Corr won the first set 6-3 because of a Thornfeldt scratch on the 7 ball in the last game, which made it easy for Corr to get out. In the second set, the ladies traded games until Corr reached the hill with the score 5-4. At that point, again Thornfeldt got in trouble and scratched on the 7 ball, and in a now-familiar scenario, Corr ran the remaining two balls out for the 6-4 win.
