Jones and Sergent Big Winners at Midwest Billiard Expo/Open By InsidePOOL StaffThe Midwest Billiard Expo/Open, which was held at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL, concluded this evening with Tammie Jones and Jeff Sergent the winners of the 8-ball divisions. The event began on October 16, 2003, and concluded on October 19.Pam Bell secured the hot seat with a win over Angie Mancusa and awaited the outcome of the one-loss side matches. Tammie Jones defeated Rachael Abbink 4-1 and sent her home with fourth place and then moved on to challenge Mancusa. This was a sweep for Jones, who took the match without allowing her opponent one game to meet Bell in the finals.Bell and Jones met last May in the finals of the VNEA Master 8-Ball Women’s Division, with Jones coming out on top. This time would be no different. She was too smooth and too controlled for Bell, who had trouble with her break and handed a couple of games to her opponent. Jones won the first set 4-1, and as the format was true double elimination, proceeded on her quest to defeat Bell again. Bell played nicely in the second set, but she was no match for Jones, who breezed by her by the same score of 4-1.
In the men’s division, Eric Durbin battled with Scott Tollefson in the quarterfinals. Durbin had been playing excellent pool for the past two days during the event, and the balls were floating into the pockets for him until he met the tall U.S. Amateur runner-up. At that point, he became yet another player who fell victim to the likeable Tollefson, who won that match 4-1. Tollefson went on to meet Jason Kirkwood, who lost the hot seat match to Jeff Sergent 5-3. The animated Tollefson ran into trouble with his break in this match almost immediately and all but handed the match to Kirkwood 4-2.In the final match between Kirkwood and Sergent, Kirkwood played some strong, confident pool in the first set, quickly taking a 3-0 lead in the race to 5. Sergent won the next two after a dry break by his opponent and a break-and-run to make it 4-2. In the final rack, Kirkwood broke and ran out to the 8 but hooked himself. Without missing a beat, he kicked the 8 into the side cleanly to win the first set 5-2. The second set, a race to 4, started out with Sergent gaining a 3-1 lead. on the hill, he got into trouble on his way to a run-out and was forced to jump a ball. He fouled and gave Kirkwood another game. on his next break he came up dry, and Kirkwood looked like he was out, but he hooked himself on his last stripe and left the table wide open for Sergent to run the solids out, winning the second match 4-2.
