Jung Claims Final Stop on San Diego 9-Ball TourBreezing through the San Diego 9-Ball Tour season finale unscathed, Marshall Jung took first place with convincing style.  Every player that arrived at College Billiards Center on July 17-18, 2004, fought well for the $2,540 prize purse.  The end of Day One saw the field of 44 players whittled down to just eight players, including, Sy Nakashima, Steve Eakins, and Ken Johnson on the winners' side and Damian Overton, Bruce Hawley, Shane Manaole, and Victor Castro on the one-loss side.Day Two was filled with exciting matches as the field narrowed to the final four.  Once Overton, an England native who is staying temporarily in the U.S., defeated San Diego's own Manaole, he waited as Santa Ana resident Jung and Eakins played for the hot seat.  The hot seat match was an intense match culminating when the players tied on the hill.  Jung came up empty on the break, and Eakins proceeded to make the 1 and 2 balls.  After poor shape on the 3 caused Eakins to miss, Jung pocketed it but was forced to use a bridge on the 4 and missed.  Safeties were traded back and forth on the 4 ball, but it was Eakins who was able to make the shot.  He ran several balls but was left with an 8 ball where his only option was to go up and down the rail for shape on the 9.  As the crowd watched intensely, Eakins shot the 8 and missed, leaving Jung with a touchy 8-9 combination.  Jung calmly lined up the shot and pocketed the 9 for the win.  With smooth run-outs, Overton quickly dispatched Eakins when they faced off in the match to determine third place with a 6-1 final decision.Jung and Overton played in the final race to 9.  Both are skillful and courteous players, but it was Jung who started off on fire, quickly taking the match to 5-0 without giving Overton much of a chance at the table.  Overon was able to narrow the gap to 6-4 with some solid play on his part, as well as a couple of unusual misses by Jung.  Playing some fine safeties in a few games allowed Jung to get ball in hand and run out.  He was on the hill at 8-5, but a costly miss on the 8 ball allowed Overton another game.  Overton broke and was disheartened when it came up empty.  A clean run-out by Jung earned him the 9-5 victory and the $700 top prize.Results:1st Marshall Jung $7002nd Damian Overton $500 3rd Steve Eakins $340 4th Shane Manaole $220 5th Sy Nakashima, Ken Johnson $180 7th Victor Castro, Bruce Hawley $100 9th Hydred Makabali, Steve Matthews, Louis Ulrich, Ray Tedrick $60  Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
