Kennedy Bests Talented FieldBy Bill RosenbergerThe J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour garnered a high turnout of 57 players on January 8-9 at Cunningham's Pool & Darts in Vero Beach, FL. But it was tournament director and touring pro Tommy Kennedy who finished in first with a solid win over David Grossman in the finals.The event, which was dubbed "The East Coast Open," not only drew some of the area's best players, but it also prompted the local newspaper to provide coverage. And it was almost a Cinderella story for Jeannie Seaver, who finished in fourth place after two days of exciting play. But the final three players were Grossman, Kennedy, and Buddy Hall. After Hall fell to Adam Wheeler in the winners' bracket, he went to work in one-loss side, eventually meeting up with Wheeler again and avenging the defeat with a 9-3 win. Hall then ousted Seaver to reach the semifinals against Grossman, who had fell to Kennedy 9-5 in the hot seat match.Hall and Grossman put on quite a match in the semifinals, with the contest reaching the hill. Hall's late charge gave him an 8-6 lead, and in the ensuing match, he ran up to the 9 but missed. Grossman took advantage of the miss and ran out the rest of the match for a comeback win 9-8. The final contest was a rematch between Kennedy and Grossman, and it was more of the same for both players. Grossman couldn't bring the momentum he had gained from his comeback win over Hall, while Kennedy's fiery play only got hotter. Kennedy wiped Grossman off the table with an 11-3 win to take home the top prize.
