Kid Delicious Wins Viking's Northfield Event In one of the best final matches in Viking Tour history, Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich triumphed over Leil Gay at Northfield Billiards in Northfield, OH, at their event that was held on March 15-16, 2003.  The $1,000-added tournament drew a strong field of 57 players, with top dogs Troy Frank; Shawn Putnam, Viking's Player of the Year for the past four years; Kevin England, and other past champions.  Frank and Basavich met earlier in the tournament, with Frank up 4-2 when Basavich fired in a jump shot and then only allowed his opponent back at the table once before winning the match 7-4.  Frank was ultimately knocked out of the tournament by Gay, while Putnam also made an early exit from the event.  He won his first match against past Viking Tour champ Tom Purich and then went on to be defeated by England 7-6 and Tulio Antonelli 7-3.
In the quarterfinals, Frank and Gay faced off, with Frank ending up victorious with a 7-3 score.  Gay also met Basavich on his way to the finals and was up 4-1, 5-2, and 6-3 before Basavich made a tough jump shot and then went on to tie at the hill, running out the last rack for the 7-6 win.  Basavich defeated Kevin England in the hot seat match and then waited for the winner between Gay and England.  Gay won his match against England, relegating him to third place and going on to face Basavich in the true double-elimination format.  While a hundred or so spectators looked on, he won the first set 7-4, but Basavich took control of the second set and put a 7-3 smackdown on Gay, sending him home with second place.1    Danny Basavich2    Leil Gay3    Kevin England4    Troy Frank5/6    Dave Slovik, Kenny Karakes7/8    Pete Vanderau, John Maki9/12    Angel Sepulveda, Pat "Parma" Louis, Matt "Hojo" Hojnowski, Louie KaramisNext week's Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour event will take place at Murphy's Brass Rail in Athens, GA.
